8 Moons and Upcoming Shows

Eight Moons

As I write this we are in the final hours before releasing a project we are very excited to share with you all. We’re calling it ‘Eight Moons’. Taking inspiration from the Wheel of the Year (aka the Cycle of Celebration aka The Druid Calendar), we thought it an appropriate title for our ‘Improvised Suite’ - a work of music without any planning or rehearsal freely improvised and broken into eight sections for your listening pleasure. We hope you have as much fun hearing it as we did making it! Here’s a brief description from our bassist John:

“'Eight Moons' was recorded as one contiguous group improvisation during a recording session that took place in Bushwick, Brooklyn in August 2020.

The title of 'Eight Moons' emerged from listening to the piece after being recorded instead of directing the improvisation beforehand. The image of eight moons emerged as a symbolic concept to describe heavenly bodies exerting forces on human behaviors and whose impact we might feel but lack the capacity to fully understand.

Counting moons is also an ancient method of measuring time, and time itself is a human tool of measurement whose meaning and measure have become distorted for so many during the period of global pandemic acutely experienced while recording this improvised work.”

You can hear Eight Moons starting September 2nd

Look out for a vinyl pressing in 2023!

Fall Shows 2022

EJF 2022 9/14 (7:30pm)

We’ve got some really exciting shows coming up in the next few weeks, and we can’t wait to share our work with live audiences again. First up is the inaugural Edison Jazz Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan. You can find us at La Luna Recording & Sound on 9/14, to keep with the moon theme. Program director Peter Formanek’s trio will open the show at 7:30 followed by us at 8:30. We’re really excited to perform in this setting back in Kalamazoo where we all met many moons ago. The Festival runs from 9/12-9/18, so if you’re in the Kalamazoo area check out this amazing free series of events brought to you by the Edison neighborhood of Kalamazoo.

TipTop Deluxe 9/14 (11pm)

We’re playing a quick set at the Tip Top in Grand Rapids, MI around 11:30pm. Come through for some late-night shenanigans!

Old Dog Tavern 9/17 (8pm)

We’re teaming up with an old comrade in Charles the Osprey, “the kings of instrumental math-rock” from GR at Old Dog Tavern - this “ever-evolving spot, located in the historic Star Paper Co. building” in Kalamazoo Michigan. Come enjoy some face-melting, cool brews, and pasties! For a little band trivia, VSA used to play here way back in the early aughts when it was known as ‘Kraftbrau'. We can’t wait to take this stage by storm again!
